Studio Painting!

Hey guys!

So, I've been busy, with work and all, trying to focus on life, and now that I'm fully situated in the STL, guess what.....

I HAVE MY STUDIO FINISHED! Its a little room next to the entrance to my bedroom, and I've transformed it into a small art nook. It also took two plastic paint-shield tarps, and poster tape to do it, but its up and running! If you don't believe me look at my palate table:

Messy. Just how I like it! :D

Now, I've started my first painting, and I hated it. I think it was because I felt so rusty from not painting for so long, and because it wasn't what I originally saw in my head. I cleaned off my palate, re-thought my sketches, held my breath started it over, and now it looks like this:

I know it kind of looks weird because its just a random floating face in the middle of a blue sky, but believe me, its going to probably be one of my better pieces.

Anyway, I'm also still doing caricature commissions. I managed to do this little piece for an engaged couple who is going to reproduce it on a cookie for their wedding. I thought it was a neat idea:

If you want me to draw you, a loved one, or even you and a loved one, or someone who just really deserves a caricature, all you have to do is contact me via ryanportraits.com, and I can give you my prices!

Thanks! :D

Paintings of the Past Months

Hey guys, Just wanted to show you some pictures of some of my recent paintings!

I know, scream with delight. You know you want to!

I finally got some good pictures of three of my works, and I wanted to show you them. Soon, I'll get more of them, but now that I'm settled into my new apartment, its time to create! So, you'll see more and more pictures come in very soon of started projects.

But for now, enjoy these!

This was an experiment. I've always wanted to work on wood surfaces, so I chose this piece of particle board that I found in the garage of my parent's house, measured and sawed it until it was perfectly rectangular, then painted a study of the male figure. After this successful experiment of me creating this painting, you will see my work on wood surfaces more often...

This was also an experiment. I wanted to take the spirits of how I draw and sketch and transfer it into an actual painting. I used a few of my figure drawing sketches and pictures of stormy nights to figure out just how I could push the limits.

This was a painting I did to not only experiment with using different values of one color, and also experimenting with different consistencies with paint, thinning it with water and using it to just do what it naturally does over the canvas. I loved how it felt, and I will definitely use this technique again in my paintings.

Now, there are more paintings, but I will wait until later to post them. Until then, see ya!

Meet Me in St. Louis!

Love that musical.

Anyway, I'm now officially located in St. Louis, and after some issues with the bed, breaking out in hives from stress, going to the hospital and such, I have finally managed to take pictures of my room! (yes, it has been that kind of change)

But fear not, because I actually have pictures of my room! I would also have pictures of my little art room next to my room, but right now it is under construction, and when I start painting, you'll see fifty million pictures of it anyway from me updating.

SO, here is pictures of my wonderful new room in my apartment!

Here's my new bed... its a click clack futon. I decked it out to make it look fancy... and its in sofa form!

I have a giant window. I love windows. But, if you want proof that I live in the city now, there's a giant brick wall where the next house is that I swear, if I opened my window, I could reach out and touch it. At least the window next to my window is stained glass, so its kind of pretty.

This is my night stand. I kind of like earthy things, but because Autumn is my favorite season, I went a little overboard with leaves EVERYWHERE..... The lamp that sits on the table was actually a school project from two semesters ago. Its like a collage/painting/sculpture. I also like the fact that its super functional. Oh, and I burn incense a lot, so there's an incense burner.

These were my favorite drawings I did in figure drawing class last semester. The two to the right I drew on paper bags (because its free paper!). I'll take better pictures of them later, but they really match my room.

This was a painting that I did for a class that I haven't had a chance to take a good picture of. There are a lot of paintings that need to be taken care of...

More paper bag drawings on another wall over my dresser. The bear's name is Quincy!

Those are two Asian themed scroll drawings that I didn't make, two posters from high school plays I was in, and a painting that I did make, and will have better pictures of soon.

This is a beautiful cheap rug that I love that I got a long time ago... its one of my favorite things in my room.

Oh... that's just me being silly.

Keep checking in for new artwork!

Much Needed Update!

Hey, I know that I have been a bit occupied with life for the two years I've neglected this blog! In the recent change of events, I'm moving to St. Louis in a week, I have updated my website to a different domain name (www.ryanportraits.com) and I have started taking commissions for portraits, caricature gigs, and studio caricatures. In other words, I've become a very busy man.

But, if you're looking to commission me, I'm not too busy!

So, I'm going to show you how busy I've become with new artwork. I also have a complete sketchbook that I have finished and, if you follow me on facebook, you have seen it already. But if you haven't, fear not, for I will be posting them off and on in the next few weeks because of being busy with the move. But, I promise you, this blog will be updated regularly. I want everyone to know what I'm doing and when I am doing it at all times.

And there will be no more yearly pauses between posts. Enjoy!

A portrait I painted for Sarah and Tiara.

A self portrait I painted for a class (I even added crocheting and buttons. I honestly think it wouldn't have been entirely me without them!).

A portrait I painted inspired by Caterina Cavalari, an opera singer of the Victorian era.

A doodle that became an actual wallpaper for my computer.

So, as you can see, from my previous post, my artwork is much more refined than before. I really did need an update. 'Till next time!
